Description
Pensacola Opera's 2012 Artists in Residence will present Peter Brook's La Tragédie de Carmen on Thursday, April 12, Friday, April 13 and Sunday, April 15, 2012 at the Pensacola Opera Center. Jealousy, and love that obeys no laws, punctuate Peter Brook's Tony Award-winning adaptation of Bizet's most popular opera, Carmen. This 90-minute adaptation depicts a more intense and immediate tale of the doomed Carmen. Carmen, the passionate gypsy girl, hounded by the card of death; José, the inexperienced soldier confused by love and loyalty; and Escamillo, the stunning bullfighter, all unleash a deadly spectacle of sound and passion. The score retains all of the most famous musical moments of the original; Carmen's Habanera and Seguidilla, Don Jose's Flower Song, and Escamillo's swaggering Toreador Song. Performances will take place at the Pensacola Opera Center located at 75 S. Tarragona Street in downtown Pensacola. Show times are Thursday, April 12 and Friday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 15 at 2:00 pm. This opera will be performed in French with English supertitles. Tickets are $18 for adults, $10 for students and active-duty military. This is a limited-seating event. Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling the Pensacola Opera Center at (850) 433-6737. This performance serves to showcase the wonderful talents of our young musicians who make up Pensacola Opera's 2012 Artists in Residence Program. Casting includes: Mezzo-soprano Samantha Korbey as Carmen, Soprano Jennifer Juilfs as Micaëla, Tenor Joseph Shadday as Don José and Baritone Mitchell Hutchings as Escamillo. The opera will be directed by Dugg McDonough, conducted by Dana Sadava and accompanied by Jerome Shannon. Audiences will have the opportunity to experience these artists' final performance of their four-month residency in Pensacola.
