SMETANA - The Moldau
DE FALLA - Nights in the Gardens of Spain
SIBELIUS - Tapiola
RESPIGHI - Roman Festivals
Few topics have inspired composers as much as pride and reverence for their countries. This unique program collects four such pieces, each as different from each other as the countries that inspired them. Smetana follows Bohemia’s most famous river, the Moldau, through a sequence of vignettes that capture the culture and landscape of his homeland. De Falla takes a different approach, writing a glittering and exotic evocation of warm evenings in sumptuous Spanish gardens. Sibelius’ last piece, Tapiola, captures the eerie solemnity and savage beauty of the forests of Northern Finland. Respighi’s raucous portrayal of Festival Days in Ancient Rome is truly an over-the-top extravaganza.
